Regular maintenance by experienced engineers is the best way to keep your chiller in good working order. Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) provides essential works & checks that cannot be done by eye alone. However if you want to give your chiller a quick visual health check, the steps below may help you identify some potential issues before they become more serious.
Are the coils clear of debris?
Over time the coils can become clogged up with all sorts of matter, from leaves to empty crisp packets. Regular maintenance should prevent the build up from being detrimental to the operation of the chiller. However if the chiller has been a little neglected and you have blocked coils it will have a major impact on the efficiency and operation of the chiller.
Can you see any signs of an oil leak?
Oil is integral to the smooth running of a chiller. If you see evidence of an oil leak anywhere on the chiller it needs to be checked out. Low levels of oil could (amongst other things) cause the compressor to fail. If you see an oil leak you should get a qualified engineer to check the chiller.
Check the control panel, are there any error codes flashing up?
Does the chiller have any error codes or lights flashing on its controls? The chiller may be connected to your BMS, this may also provide you with vital information on the health of your chiller. If you do have any error codes, they should be investigated.
Inspect the pipe work.
Take a look at the compressor.
Look for signs of wear and tear. Externally does it look sound? Is it vibrating excessively? Does it seem to be making too much noise? The compressor is the heart of your chiller, if anything looks untoward it is worth getting it looked at.
Are the fans running?
If the chiller has a demand for chilled water the fans should be running. If a fan is not running it could indicate an issue with the fan or controls.
