Air Conditioning with Ice

We can see the cogs turning? Imagine if you could save Energy and improve reliability in your Chilled Water Air Conditioning system?

Let’s paint the Picture for you! - It’s a seriously hot day and Your Air Conditioning system is running flat out. Clearly the top priorities is keeping not only the employees cool and your computer systems running but also Comfort, Reliability and Energy efficiency.

How can things be improved?

So, let’s set the scene some more. We are going to take you back to your Summer holidays. You are sitting on a terrace with a Cold drink with Ice. The Ice takes some time to melt but it keeps the drink cool as long as possible. What’s that got to do with anything?

Now imagine something similar with a Chilled Water Air Conditioning system. However how can Ice be used in a Chilled water system? Well actually the technology isn’t particularly new. In fact, large Commercial Ice Storage systems have been around since the late 80’s. However, they fell out of favour as Businesses turned to VRF Refrigerant based systems instead of large scale chilled water.

Businesses are Returning to Chilled Water

There is now a return to Chilled water through improvements in control, energy efficiency and ease of installations. One American manufacturer Ice Energy has developed a system that takes advantage of low cost off-peak electricity – usually at night to build-ice in bulk, then store it and (the next day when it’s needed) provide a controlled melt to provide the melted cold water that connects to the buildings chilled water.

Using one of the simplest and most basic ways of creating very cold water is the use of – ICE! All in a neat and packaged unit. You can read more by clicking on this link The manufacturers description, overview and video describes what the system is, what it does, how the system works, the applications and how easy it can be installed.
Clearly these systems are not suitable for every building or system. However, for the right application, these type systems are easy to install and seamlessly integrate into a buildings chilled water cooling system.

Unit Types and applications

For commercial and industrial buildings, these Ice Storage systems are available in one or more 12-40 Kw commercial A/C units and can be installed on rooftops or on the ground. They can be connected together to provide the bulk of the primary cooling system. These Ice storage systems offer savings of 40% over conventional Chillers.

In addition to be able to interface with existing chilled water systems, they can of course be used as a standalone application and can connect with the latest hybrid chilled water/VRF systems. Furthermore, there are now solar cooling versions available making them even more efficient.

Clearly there is a huge drive for Energy efficiency in Commercial Buildings and this is a great way to get started.

Ice storage units have been installed in thousands of locations worldwide and we are delighted to be able to offer this to our customers.
Ice storage is a clean, reliable and least-cost distributed energy storage solution for the grid.
